Tracking data from LLM Pulse, a citation-monitoring service, shows Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations fluctuated between roughly 13% and 44% over a 90-day window in mid-2026 — a swing large enough to change which single domain dominates AI answers week to week. Among US news outlets, TechRadar led AI citation share at 3.26%, ahead of Forbes, PCMag, and The New York Times, with practical, recommendation-style journalism outperforming hard news. Among social platforms, YouTube accounted for roughly 20.7% of citations — more than triple the next-highest platform, Instagram. The consistent finding across all three data sets: AI systems draw disproportionately from a small number of trusted sources, that set is not identical to Google's top search results, and the composition of that set changes over time rather than staying fixed.
⚠️ A note on sourcing: the citation-share figures in this article come from LLM Pulse, a newer AI-citation tracking service. Unlike the traffic and conversion studies we cite elsewhere (SE Ranking, Semrush, AirOps, Muck Rack), we have not been able to independently cross-verify LLM Pulse's methodology or sample size against a second source. Treat the specific percentages below as a snapshot from one tracking tool, not an independently confirmed industry consensus — the underlying pattern (a small set of dominant, shifting sources) is consistent with what other research in this space has found, but the exact numbers are this tool's own measurement.
One Domain Went From 13% to 44% of Citations — and Back — in 90 Days
Between May and July 2026, LLM Pulse tracked reddit.com's share of ChatGPT citations across a rolling 28-day window. In early May, Reddit accounted for roughly 13% of citations among the top 10 tracked domains. By June 1, that had climbed to 44.14%. By late July, it had fallen back to roughly 12–15% — nearly a full round trip in under three months.
Global, all-time snapshot — reddit.com leads all tracked domains in ChatGPT citation share at 14.42%. This is a different measure than the 90-day trend line described above: the ranking here is a stacked, cumulative view, while the volatility figures above track how that single domain's share moved week to week. Source: LLM Pulse.
No other domain in the same tracked set came close to that volatility. El País, the second-ranked domain for most of the window, held a comparatively steady 5–7% throughout. Google.com, Apple.com, NIH.gov, Trustpilot, and several others each sat in a narrow 2–4% band the entire period.
The takeaway is not "Reddit matters." That much is already well established. The takeaway is that how much Reddit matters is not fixed — and any AI-visibility strategy built around a static snapshot of "the sources AI trusts" is building on sand.
TechRadar Beats Forbes and The New York Times
Among US news and media outlets specifically, LLM Pulse's July 2026 analysis of 5.35 million AI citations to non-branded US questions found only 3.26% of citations went to news outlets at all — and TechRadar led that narrow slice, ahead of Forbes, PCMag, and every other outlet tracked, with The New York Times back in tenth place.

| Rank | Outlet | Citation share |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | TechRadar.com | 3.26% |
| 2 | Forbes.com | 2.72% |
| 3 | PCMag.com | 1.80% |
| 4 | USNews.com | 1.30% |
| 5 | Yahoo.com | 1.20% |
| 6 | TomsGuide.com | 1.11% |
| 7 | CNET.com | 1.09% |
| 8 | Mashable.com | 1.00% |
| 9 | TechTarget.com | 0.94% |
| 10 | NYTimes.com | 0.87% |
The pattern behind the ranking is straightforward once you see it: AI answers reward hands-on, recommendation-led journalism — product reviews, how-tos, comparison pieces — over hard news reporting, because most AI answers are recommendations or explanations, not news summaries. TechRadar, PCMag, Tom's Guide, and CNET all specialize in exactly that format. The New York Times, despite far greater overall authority and readership, produces comparatively little of it.
BEING A TRUSTED NEWS BRAND IS NOT THE SAME AS BEING A CITABLE AI SOURCE.
Domain authority built for Google rankings does not automatically transfer to AI citation share. What transfers is content format — direct, practical, recommendation-shaped writing that an AI system can lift cleanly into an answer.
YouTube Is the Real Social Citation Leader — Not Reddit
Once the analysis is narrowed to social and video platforms specifically, a different leader emerges. YouTube accounted for roughly 20.7% of social-platform citations — more than triple Instagram, the second-place platform, and well ahead of every other network tracked.
Source: LLM Pulse, 28-day rolling window.
The dominant social citation source by a wide margin. Video content, especially tutorials, reviews, and demonstrations, appears to be heavily favored when AI systems pull from social platforms.
A distant second. Likely reflects visual/lifestyle and local business content being pulled into location- and recommendation-based answers.
Still meaningfully cited, likely via business pages, reviews, and local community groups rather than personal posts.
Cited enough to matter for B2B and professional-services queries specifically, though far behind the video and visual platforms above it.
Present but modest relative to its cultural footprint — possibly reflecting indexing or crawlability limitations rather than a lack of relevant content.
Each under 0.1% of citations. Functionally negligible as AI citation sources at the time of this snapshot, regardless of their size as social platforms.
Reddit is not part of this specific ranking — it's tracked separately as a general-web domain rather than a social platform in this dataset — but its earlier 13–44% swing (above) suggests it would likely rival or exceed YouTube's share if the two were compared directly, at least during periods of elevated citation activity.
What This Actually Means If You're Not Reddit or YouTube
None of this data suggests a small business should try to "become" Reddit or out-publish TechRadar. That's not the useful takeaway. The useful takeaway is what these three findings have in common:
- A small number of sources absorb a disproportionate share of citations. The long tail of the internet — including most business websites — competes for what's left over.
- The winning sources aren't winning on brand authority alone. TechRadar beats The New York Times not because it's more trusted in general, but because its content format matches what AI systems extract cleanly into recommendation-style answers.
- The list is not fixed. Reddit's own citation share more than tripled and then fell back within one quarter. Whatever ranking exists today is a snapshot, not a settled hierarchy.
The practical implication for an independent business is the same one that runs through all of our research: getting cited by AI is less about matching the scale of Reddit or YouTube, and more about becoming part of the same kind of independent, third-party, recommendation-shaped evidence that these platforms happen to produce at scale. A single well-placed, well-structured, independently-hosted article can function the same way — just at a scale matched to one business rather than millions of posts.
That is the mechanism behind AEOGeoAI's own approach: publishing structured, recommendation-shaped articles on verified third-party outlets rather than relying on a business's own website alone.
